Two winters ago, new University of Buffalo defensive coordinator Lou Tepper baited Khalil Mack.

Set him right up.

Now a ridiculously skilled outside linebacker, Mack likely will be among the first few players selected Thursday on Day 1 of the NFL draft. He may even be taken No. 1 overall.

But two years ago at this time he was only flashing such game-breaking ability.

Tepper, a wily old coach with a pedigree of helping produce top-flight NFL edge rushers, arrived in Buffalo and immediately saw superstar potential in Mack on game tape.

What Tepper did not know was what kind of competitor Mack was and how much character the young man possessed. Tepper had to find out.
