It really came as no surprise to anyone who has been watching Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp closely, but head coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday named Michael Vick his starting quarterback for the regular-season opener.

Kelly was supposed to simply name his starter for this Saturday’s pre-season tilt against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, but the rookie coach did the Philly media one better, confirming most suspicions.

“We’ve evaluated the situation and Michael Vick is going to start for us against the Washington Redskins (Sept. 9),” Kelly told reporters. The former Oregon head coach added that Vick will “hopefully” play two quarters in Jacksonville. Kelly had insisted since being named Eagles coach in January that there would be an open competition in camp between Vick and Nick Foles, who played in seven games as a rookie for Philadelphia last season.
