It’s the NFL Coach’s Fight Club:

In this corner, wearing the blue trunks — Tom Coughlin.

And, in the other corner, wearing the red Walmart special hoodie — Bill Belichick.

Both are in the running for the current title of Mr. Mean.

Eye gouging, biting remarks and hitting below the belt are expected, in the fine tradition of NFL coaches such as Buddy (Nature Boy) Ryan and the legendary pugilist, Tom (Muhammad) Cable.

Receiver Wes Welker has revealed that behind the tempered, phlegmatic, veneer of the Patriots’ dressing room, there was a bubbling cauldron of distress.

Welker, the lynch-pin of the Patriots’ passing attack for six seasons, says Belichick upbraided him in front of his teammates last season.

“It was just kind of hard,” Welker told Sports Illustrated, “one of those deals where you have to endure him, put up with him ... It’s the way he is.”
