Out of the blue in July, the NFL revealed that its on-field officials will strictly enforce two pass-defence rules in 2014.

 Strictly? For much of the pre-season, officials maniacally enforced those rules. Like speed-trap cops, quota-short on the last day of the month.

The crackdown is one of 10 top storylines grabbing attention, as man’s-inhumanity-to-cowhide now gloriously holds us captive on Sundays until Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1 in Glendale, Ariz.

The season kicks off Thursday night in Seattle, when the defending league champion Seahawks play host to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The other 30 teams open Sunday or Monday night.
