It appears someone in sports entertainment wants Michael Sam after the St. Louis Rams dumped the would-be first openly-gay NFLer.

No, not the CFL – although the Montreal Alouettes are said to be interested in the 24-year-old defensive end’s services.

Instead, it turns out wrestling could be in Sam’s immediate future.

The WWE has thrown Sam – who was drafted but then cut by the Rams last week – a lifeline.

If he accepts it, Sam could appear on Monday Night Raw during Monday Night Football next week.

While some NFL insiders believe Sam has a chance of being picked up by another team, the openly-gay prospect is also considered to be undersized and too slow to play his position at the highest level.

"The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I've always known. The journey continues," Sam wrote on Twitter after being cut over the weekend.

"I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career."

That is, on the field.

Not in the ring.
