And the meek shall inherit the earth, or in the case of Houston Texans rookie Tom Savage an unexpected promotion in the quarterback hierarchy.

Manziel, Bridgewater and Bortles have shared the limelight in the draft class of 2014. But it may yet be that the lesser-regarded Savage will find himself in the right place at the right time and beat them all to a starting nod in the NFL.

Savage, 24, wasn’t selected until the fourth round. He showed up at training camp still driving the Chevy Malibu he used in college. He didn’t come with a posse and he didn’t come with Manzielian expectations. Savage was destined for third-string duties behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum.

But to suggest that the Texans’ quarterback position is fluid would be polite. Suspect at best. That makes Savage’s performance in the preseason illuminating and thought provoking.
