Former U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has waded into the debate surrounding the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

She also takes issue with the D.C.-based club’s controversial team name – the “Washington” part, she explained in a Facebook post.

As for the “Redskins” nickname, she’s siding with legendary NFL coach Mike Ditka, who came out in support of the embattled franchise that is under siege to change its name.

“When the Politically Correct Police bust Ditka, they hope the silent majority will cower under leftist control,” Palin posted to Facebook. “My goodness, Ditka merely spoke his mind.

“He thinks the name should always be Washington Redskins, as a source of pride? Take the word ‘Washington’ out and I’ll agree the team name is a great source of pride.”

The 74-year-old Ditka, a three-time Super Bowl champ, said last week he hopes the Redskins won’t change their controversial name due to its rich NFL history.

“Let me say this right now," Ditka recently told the Chicago Sun-Times. “How long has the Washington team had that name? Eighty some years? Why didn’t it come up before then?

“Because we have people that sit around that have nothing to do and think, ‘maybe we can cause a stir over this.’”

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to heed calls to change or alter his team’s name.

U.S. president Barack Obama has weighed in on the matter, saying the ‘Skins should consider change their name due to it offending Native Americans.

The Washington Post editorial board also chimed in last week, announcing it will stop using “Redskins” in its columns.

The Redskins have been in existence since 1932.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been non-committal on the subject, promising to examine all perspectives on the matter.
