This week’s pre-season schedule will be as much about who isn’t starting, or playing, as it is about who will be doing the grunting and groaning.

Rookie quarterbacks Johnny Manziel, in Cleveland, and Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater, will take some snaps but their NFL debuts as starters remains on hold.

Both, however, remain in contention to become their club’s No. 1 options once the season begins.

Drew Brees hasn’t practised since last week, leading local media to speculate that Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin will share duties while he recovers from an oblique strain. Writes Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune: “There are better odds on a Sean Payton-Gregg Williams pre-game hug than on Drew Brees playing against the Rams.”
