IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys had the worst defense in the league last year and will head into 2014 season without defensive ends DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher and linebacker Sean Lee.Follow @SlamSports
Lee is out for the season with an ACL injury, Hatcher is out four-to-six weeks with a knee issue and Ware is now a member of the Denver Broncos.
The only direction the defense has gone is toward youth, which will be good only if it can perform.
Owner Jerry Jones believes the defense certainly will be better, because ...
"Because we were so bad last year there is no place (to go) but up," Jones said. "I can say it this year, we are better right now. And I think better on the field. We're certainly better on paper than we were at the end of the season last year. Not on paper at the beginning of the season last year, but on paper right now relative to how we ended up last year."
Vice-president Stephen Jones said things were so bad, injury wise, at the end of last season that they were signing guys off the street who didn't know the defense.
He said a number of the players who played in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles weren't even brought back to the offseason program as part of the 90 man roster.
