Jack Elway, the 24-year-old son of Denver Broncos general manager and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, was arrested on assault charges after his girlfriend told police he pulled her out of a car by her hair.

The Denver Post reported Monday that Elway ripped out pieces of the woman's hair and pushed her to the ground, causing her to scrape her knees.

John Albert Elway III was booked into the Denver jail on charges of assault and disturbing the peace, then was released Saturday on $550 bail, according to jail records. A protection order was issued for the alleged victim.

The newspaper reported that the couple, who have been dating for a year, got into an argument around 1:40 a.m. Saturday while driving, the police report said.

Elway fled the scene near a college campus in downtown Denver, leaving his vehicle, according to documents filed at the Denver courthouse.

He was bonded out by his father. His next scheduled court appearance is June 5.

"This is a personal family matter and the Broncos will not have any additional comment on it," Broncos executive director of media relations Patrick Smyth said in a statement.

Jack Elway was a standout quarterback at Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colo., before going to Arizona State. As a redshirt freshman quarterback in spring 2009, he elected to leave the Sun Devils' football program.

The younger Elway lives in Newport Beach, Calif., according to his Facebook page.
