ORLANDO - Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly is in a “real serious fight” for his life, a former teammate said Tuesday.

Kelly, 54, successfully defeated upper-jaw cancer last summer. A checkup earlier this month revealed that not only had the cancer returned but it’s spreading quickly, his wife Jill has indicated via social media.

A Hall of Famer who starred for the Bills from 1986-96, Kelly is expected to have surgery at a New York City hospital -- as early as Thursday or perhaps next Tuesday -- according to the Associated Press.

“He is in a real serious fight, there’s no question,” Kelly’s good friend and longtime former Bills teammate Steve Tasker told Buffalo radio station WGR 550-AM on Tuesday morning.
