Does it really matter that quarterback Cam Newton is having surgery on his left ankle, which will sideline him until training camp?

If the Carolina Panthers had one -- just one -- wide receiver on the roster who had ever caught an NFL pass, maybe it would.

But they don’t. So what’s the difference?

Newton hurt the ankle in Carolina’s 23-10 NFC divisional playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 12.

“The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game,” Panthers trainer Ryan Anderson said in a statement Monday afternoon, “and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down.

“But it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it.”

Newton will be sidelined for four months and may recover just in time for the start of training camp. The first overall draft pick in 2011 thus will miss all spring workouts.

It gets worse for the Panthers offence.
