The AFC arms race this week has been something, hasn’t it?
The Denver Broncos added three Pro Bowlers to its defence. The New England Patriots added two. The Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts are doing what they do every year: throw money at everyone in sight.
And then there are the Baltimore Ravens, who quietly but successfully re-signed the most impactful of their own free agents before they ended a solid week with a big splash.
Late Friday afternoon the Ravens signed Steve Smith -- the five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver cut by the Carolina Panthers a day before -- to a three-year, $11-million contract.
On an early-evening conference call with reporters, Smith explained why he chose Baltimore.
