Further proof that the mission to build a coach staff with quarterback Matthew Stafford in mind was not lip service, the Detroit Lions hired Joe Lombardi as offensive coordinator.
Lombardi, the grandson of Vince Lombardi, was quarterbacks coach of the New Orleans Saints and has been with the franchise since 2007.
The Lions hired Jim Caldwell as head coach last week.
Caldwell's work as quarterbacks coach with Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts was a key factor in Detroit's decision to make him head coach. Caldwell reviewed all of Stafford's pass attempts from the 2013 season before his interview with team management and reviewed film with Stafford.
Lombardi was promoted to quarterbacks coach of the Saints in 2009 and was a prominent part of building the team's weekly game plan alongside coach Sean Payton and Drew Brees.
Caldwell said last week at his introductory press conference that he was not ready to decide who would call plays for the Lions without naming a coordinator.
Lombardi has not called plays in the NFL.
