SEATTLE -- Needing only 18 more yards to score a game-winning touchdown, the San Francisco 49ers tested cornerback Richard Sherman with what he called a “mediocre” receiver.

Sherman is maybe the best cornerback, and certainly the most outspoken, in the NFL.

Was throwing at him a big mistake with the game on the line?

“I think everybody knows that. You throw that, well, that’s just a mistake,” Sherman said of the play that sealed a 23-17 win for the Seahawks and a Super Bowl berth.

In the last minute, Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick lobbed a pass to his favourite receiver, Michael Crabtree, in the back corner of the end zone. It was decently thrown, but Sherman made a great play on it, leaping and tipping the ball into the air.

Teammate Malcolm Smith, a linebacker, intercepted.

“I was pretty sure that everybody knew that Crabtree was a mediocre receiver. Mediocre,” Sherman said.
