NaVorro Bowman can only hope that he’s as good in January as he was in December.

The San Francisco 49ers linebacker was named the December defender of the month and may yet be selected as the NFL’s defensive player of the year.

Bowman’s December was mind-boggling. According to the NFL’s release, he became the only player in the past 20 years to combine at least 45 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions (one for a TD), two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in one month.

Bowman’s biggest play will go down as one of the most memorable in franchise history. In the final regular-season game at Candlestick Park, he sealed a win and a playoff berth with an 89-yard interception return for a score in a 34-24 win over Atlanta on Dec. 23.

“He’s a great player,” Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers acknowledged this week as he prepared to face Bowman and the Niners on the tundra of Lambeau Field.
