Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is out for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Rodgers believed he was ready to play, but he was not medically cleared Friday after participating in practice on a limited basis this week. He took snaps with the first-team offense in practice, elevating optimism that the All-Pro passer could play at Dallas.

"Aaron feels like he's ready to go," coach Mike McCarthy said Friday.

McCarthy said he agreed with the medical staff that Rodgers should sit.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk said Thursday he felt Rodgers was ready based on how he looked in practice.

"Rodgers is very disappointed. He's frustrated. But speaking with (doctors), this was right decision," McCarthy said. "I'm not going to get into scans, he was not scanned this morning. The hurdle Rodgers wanted to get over, he felt he was ready to play. All the facts and evaluation have gone into it."

Instead of Rodgers, backup Matt Flynn will start for the third game in a row.

Rodgers hasn't played since Nov. 4, when he suffered a broken collarbone in a Monday Night Football game at Lambeau Field against the Chicago Bears.

The Packers are 1-3-1 without Rodgers, dropping behind the Detroit Lions and Bears in the NFC North.
