A post-game melee in Denver Thursday night was apparently over little more than a near-collision in the parking lot at Sports Authority Field, according to police.

"It doesn't appear that this was related to the outcome of the game," Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke said according to CNN. "It doesn't appear that this was Broncos versus Chargers. It appears this stemmed from a traffic altercation in which the suspects were backing out of a parking space and nearly struck the victims' vehicle."

Four people were stabbed, with one critically wounded outside a stadium hosting an NFL game between the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos, police said.

Three of the men who were stabbed were in custody, conscious and talking, and a fourth possible stabbing victim fled the scene, Warneke said.

The incident was witnessed by fans leaving the stadium but further details were unclear, he said.

The Chargers beat the Broncos 27-20, bolstering the California franchise's playoff chances and delivering the Denver football team its first home loss of the season.

The confrontation followed a series of recent violent incidents at U.S. football stadiums.

Earlier this month, a man died after a struggle outside Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, during a game against Denver.
