St. Louis Rams safety T.J. McDonald appeared to tackle San Francisco 49ers' tight end Vernon Davis by the penis on Sunday.

Even worse, McDonald apparently had every right to do so, which has San Francisco’s franchise player calling on the NFL to amend its rule book to outlaw what was a low blow in every sense of the phrase.

During the third quarter of San Fran’s 23-13 win over the Rams on Sunday, Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick hit his favourite target on a crossing pattern for a gain of 20 yards.

But replays showed McDonald, a 22-year-old first-year pro, gain a decent grip between Davis’ legs, dragging the Niners’ play-maker down in a painfully awkward way.

The 29-year-old Davis remained down for a number of minutes while men everywhere cringed during a plethora of slow-motion replays, from every angle.

Davis took to Twitter on Monday in an effort to get the league to review the below-the-belt play.

"It should be a league rule saying that a defender can not tackle a player by his penis. #NFL the most painful thing ever! #NFL," Davis wrote.

He later deleted the posting.
