This lost season of Matt Ryan, this year of personal discovery and disappointment, finally had a happy ending. This time, on the road.

That he was able to stand at the end and exhale, considering how often he was hit, how many times he was sacked (six) — and that roughing the passer call taken against him — was a football miracle alone. On this day, Matty Ice needed a whole lot of it afterwards, just to feel alright.

And that has been the case in this season gone wrong. The fact this terrific quarterback— with 56 wins, 22 losses, one of the great first five-year totals in NFL history before this doomed season began — was upright, smiling, speaking and making sense early Sunday evening was the kind of brush with greatness not often seen around these parts.

This isn’t supposed to happen to franchise quarterbacks like Ryan, seasons like this one, now with three wins and nine losses, and the first road win for a team many thought might be Super Bowl bound.
