As if Peyton Manning’s emotions weren’t already clouding his focus before his ballyhooed return to Indianapolis on Sunday night.
Then came the Irsay heresy.
Or hearsay. Or truth. Or a jumble of all that.
It all started Tuesday in USA Today. NFL columnist Jarrett Bell interviewed the Colts owner Jim Irsay, and deep down in the story the off-beat 54-year-old said his NFL team changed its business model “a little bit, because we wanted more than one of these.”
By “one of these” Irsay meant his Super Bowl XLI championship ring.
“Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these,” Irsay continued. “Pittsburgh had two, the Giants had two, Baltimore had two and we had one. That leaves you frustrated.
“You make the playoffs 11 times, and you’re out in the first round seven out of 11 times. You love to have the Star Wars numbers from Peyton and Marvin (Harrison) and Reggie (Wayne). Mostly, you love (the ring).”
