Isn’t it strange how slowly the recognition wheel often turns in the NFL?

Trained-eye observers and Minnesota Vikings fans alike have been saying for two years that Christian Ponder was over his head as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Yet Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier kept chatting up Ponder and sending him out to start. Week after week.

Adrian Peterson’s insane season of ground-gaining last year probably hid Ponder’s deficiencies enough to give the 2011 first-round draft pick one more chance to prove he could do the job.

Well, he can’t. Not even to the satisfaction of Vikings brass anymore.

We might have gotten the first real sense that the club was taking more than a little step away from Ponder back in March when it signed Kansas City Chiefs castoff Matt Cassel, ostensibly to back him up.

We knew better, didn’t we?
