On a day of surprising quarterback news in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills’ promotion of Thad Lewis from the practice squad to starter raised the most eyebrows.

That’s a steep jump.

In a telephone interview Monday, the 25-year-old Lewis sounded as calm and as matter-of-fact as he did confident that he’s ready for the unlikely assignment.

Lewis will face one of the NFL’s most rugged defences when the Bills play host to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

“I study our offence, week in and week out, as if I was the starter,” said Lewis, whom the Bills acquired Aug. 25 in a trade with the Detroit Lions.

“You can’t come in and try to do too much. As long as I play within the system, that will be the best attribute that I can offer this team … let the playmakers surrounding me make plays.”
