Ah, the ageless debate: How much does one tip after ordering food at a restaurant?

Without warning, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was yanked into the discussion earlier this week.

On July 9, a waitress named Carissa from Del Mar Rendezvous -- a Chinese restaurant in Del Mar, Calif. -- received a $3 tip from Brees on a $74.41 take-out bill.

That's a 4% tip from a man who signed a five-year, $100 million contract last summer.

TheDirty.com got hold of the receipt and posted it online.

It quickly went viral as other websites and social media picked up the supposed cheap-celebrity gossip piece.

Brees was then attacked on Twitter by fans and the like.

To which he responded:

The restaurant's managing partner, Daniel Shalom Schreiber, apologized to Brees at length in a full-page statement posted on Del Mar's website.

In the statement, Schreiber applauds Brees for being "a very generous individual" after pointing out take-out orders don't typically call for a tip of any amount.

Schreiber commends Brees for his charitable work in the area and even donated $888.88 to the football player's foundation to douse the situation.
