Russian president Vladimir Putin is a thief, according to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who’s backtracking on an interview he gave the Boston Globe almost eight years ago.

At the time, Kraft, who also owns Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, travelled to St. Petersburg with a group of high-profile businessmen to meet with Putin, who was once a high-ranking member of the Soviet Union’s KGB.

When he arrived in the Russian capital, Putin reportedly took an interest in Kraft’s Super Bowl XXXIX ring, so much so that the Pats’ owner let him try it on – at least that’s how the original story went.

"I showed the president my most recent Super Bowl ring," Kraft told the Globe at the time. Putin "was clearly taken with its uniqueness.

“At that point, I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and the leadership of President Putin."

Now, however, Kraft is coming clean, and even went as far to accuse the Russian leader of stealing the prized possession.

"I took out the ring and showed it to (Putin)," Kraft told the New York Post. "And he put it on and he goes, 'I can kill someone with this ring.’

“I put my hand out,” Kraft continued, “and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out."

Kraft’s latest revelations would seem a reversal of his original story, one that he later said stemmed from a savvy suggestion from George W. Bush’s White House.

“It would really be in the best interest of U.S.-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present,” Kraft claimed a White House handler told him in a phone call.

Looks like that Super Bowl XLVI loss to the New York Giants is starting to get to Kraft.
