NEW YORK - By the time the Philadelphia Eagles finally threw out the NFL's welcome mat for Matt Barkley, the overriding takeaway was clear.

If you're a superstar junior collegian, and everyone's buzzing about you, and it appears you'll be a first-round lock ...

By gosh, go. Leave. Bolt. Am-scray.

Toss your binders in the garbage, thank your college coaches, hand in your dorm keys and start preparing for April's NFL draft.

Last year Barkley, the celebrated Southern Cal quarterback, didn't. He returned for his senior season in the fall, and it was disastrous in every way imaginable.

His team stunk. He struggled. He separated his throwing shoulder. Then his draft stock started sinking immediately, and bottomed out as he waited for two days in California for the phone call that never came.

How was Barkley's Friday night? About what you'd expect.
