Run-stuffers and quarterback-crushers are in more abundance than defensive backs at the top end of this year’s NFL draft.

The first defenders to be taken in Round 1 on Thursday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City are the mightiest men up front.

In this second of a two-part series, here are my Top 10 draft-eligible players on defence and what you need to know about them (My Top 10 on offence appeared here yesterday, and can be found at blogs.canoe.ca/krykslants/):

DEFENCE

1. Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah (6-foot-2 ½, 311)

VITAL STAT: Did 38 reps of 225 pounds on bench press at his pro day

LOWDOWN: Back on top, or near the top, of most drafniks’ (and teams’) defensive boards after heart scare at the scouting combine. An examination revealed Lotulelei’s left ventricle was operating at below-normal efficiency in Indy. Since has been issued a clean bill of health. Effects of a viral infection might have caused ailment.
