The late, great Canadian boxer Mark Leduc proved you can be both gay and tough at the same time. (Toronto Sun files)
So, National Football League teams want to know if Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o is gay.
I don’t get why that matters. Is it because that, if he is gay, they think he won’t be tough enough?
I don’t know if this is a politically incorrect analogy or not, but one of the toughest guys I ever met — former Olympic medallist and professional boxer Mark Leduc — was gay. In fact, to guys who were on the national team, the now-deceased Leduc was the toughest guy they had ever met.
Former national team fighter Billy Irwin tells the story about how, at the 1989 world championships in Moscow, a couple of big Russians tried to roll Irwin, a lightweight, as they got out of a hotel elevator, and how Leduc, who fought at about 140 pounds, easily handled both of them.
My guess is that I don’t think Irwin cared one way or the other that Leduc was gay.
