NFL notes: Star defensive tackle has heart issue
By JOHN KRYK, QMI Agency
INDIANAPOLIS - A medical has revealed that one of the top players at the NFL scouting combine has a serious heart condition.
The left ventricle in the heart of Star Lotulelei, a defensive tackle from Utah, is pumping at only 44% efficiency, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday.
The normal efficiency range is 55-70%, according to Mortensen.
Lotulelei did not meet with reporters on the weekend at Lucas Oil Stadium, as was expected, nor will he take part in athleticism and position drills on Monday with other defensive linemen.
Lotulelei was to return to Utah to undergo more testing.
ESPN’s Scouts, Inc., ranks Lotulelei as the No. 1 overall prospect for the entry draft, April 25-27.
NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has him rated as the second best defensive tackle.
One of the most important components of the combine for the NFL’s 32 clubs is to administer intensive, elaborate medicals to all players, for this very reason.
