You would expect the news Wednesday that the NFL is looking at expanding its playoff system from 12 to 14, even 16 teams, would cause waves throughout the football world.

 

Instead, it barely created a ripple.

You can thank the seemingly never-ending Saints Bountygate scandal for that.

You thought this tiresome soap opera was over when former league grand poohbah Paul Tagliabue ruled Tuesday that any and all potential discipline against the players implicated in the affair would be removed, both in terms of suspensions and fines?

Guess again. Under normal circumstances, a press conference like that in Irving, Tex., on Wednesday night in which commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the competition committee is looking into adding more teams to the league’s annual post-season dance would ignite a barrage of follow-up questions.

But on this far-from-normal day, Goodell received just one. Instead, he was peppered with queries involving Bountyg
