Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson picked up the tab on $19,521 worth of early Christmas gifts for a dozen lucky youngsters.

The 31-year-old hosted a shopping spree Tuesday at a Houston-area store for 12 kids selected by Child Protective Services, an agency that deals with children exposed to parental abuse. Each child had 80 seconds to grab as many toys as possible. They were also each given a gaming system and two video games. All of it was paid for by the Andre Johnson Charitable Foundation.

"You hear a minute and 20 seconds and you don't think that's a long time, but you'd be surprised by what these kids can put into their buckets," Johnson told the Texans website.

The Andre Johnson Charitable Foundation hosts a number of events for children in Houston and Johnson's hometown of Miami. Johnson, who grew up in a single-parent home, said the toy shopping spree is his favourite.

"I think it's probably the best one because you get to see the kids really enjoy it," Johnson said. "That's what this season is about. It's something I look forward to. The kids are happy, they get what they want for Christmas, and that's all that matters."
