NFL Week 2 pick'em

Some difficult pairings heading into the second week of the NFL season should give fantasy experts headaches.

Sun readers do their best to select which teams have the edge early in the season.

BEST BETS

Buccaneers (1-0) at Giants (0-1)

LINE: NY GIANTS BY 7

The Giants lost their opener to the rival Cowboys. After hosting this one, the G-Men will fly to Carolina to take on the Panthers on three days' rest. Suddenly, this one becomes essential. As we've seen many times before, the results of opening week provide influence on Week 2 pointspreads. That offers opportunity. Had this game been scheduled last week, the Giants would have been a double-digit favourite. Think about it, Super Bowl champs versus a team on a 10-game losing streak. With Tampa pulling off the upset of the Panthers, and Giants appearing rather flat vs. Dallas, we get a reduced price and one we intend to take full advantage of.

TAKING: GIANTS -7

Raiders (0-1) at Dolphins (0-1)

LINE: OAKLAND BY 2 1/2

The Dolphins are awful. However, the Raiders aren't far behind and are hardly worthy of being road faves. Greg Knapp, Oakland's offensive coordinator, should not be allowed anywhere near a chalkboard. Knapp fails to realize that you can't dink and dunk your way to points in today's NFL. Completing three-yard lateral passes all afternoon has its limitations. The Raiders offensive bright spot is RB but if Miami does anything well, it's defending the run. It won't help Oakland's cause to have played a West Coast game on Monday night only to travel clear across the country to face these Fish, a team they lost to by 20 on this very field last season.

TAKING: DOLPHINS +2 1/2

Broncos (1-0) at Falcons (1-0)

LINE: ATLANTA BY 3

Both teams played extremely well in respective openers but one squad has to lose on this day. While we respect the Broncos, they may be up against it. With its newly acquired quarterback, Denver was just featured in a huge Sunday night rematch of last year's playoff contest with the Steelers. Right away, Peyton Manning and the Broncos will be featured again, on a Monday night in the Georgia Dome, where the Falcons are 19-5 past three years. If Atlanta is truly ready to take the next step, it has to win games like this.

TAKING: FALCONS -3

Cardinals (1-0) at Patriots (1-0)

LINE: NEW ENGLAND BY 13 1/2

It's easy to support the Patriots. They rarely lose at home, score lots of points and defence appears improved. Still, having to win by two touchdowns so early in the season is a risky proposition. The Cardinals continue to find ways to win (6 of past 7) and with this margin to play with, we'll lean 'Zona.

TAKING: CARDINALS +13 1/2

Vikings (1-0) at Colts (0-1)

LINE: MINNESOTA BY 1 1/2

Andrew Luck's first game, with a 2-14 team from a year ago, pretty much produced the expected result in Chicago. Meanwhile, Vikes needed a 55-yd FG in OT to defeat the lowly Jags in Minnesota. If the Colts are to find wins this season, this subpar visitor fits the bill.

TAKING: COLTS +1 1/2

Saints (0-1) at Panthers (0-1)

LINE: NEW ORLEANS BY 2 1/2

The Saints get rare assignment of facing two most recent Heisman Award winners to start this season. If Robert Griffin III could have his way against New Orleans' suspect defence, you'd have to believe that talented sophomore Cam Newton can do the same. Do Saints miss their coach?

TAKING: PANTHERS +2 1/2

Chiefs (0-1) at Bills (0-1)

LINE: BUFFALO BY 3

Leading up to last week's debacle against the Jets, the Bills were one of this year's sexy sleeper picks among pundits everywhere. Now, people wouldn't back them with counterfeit money. The Chiefs were also shredded but on own turf while the Bills were away and Buffalo plays much better here.

TAKING: BILLS -3

Ravens (1-0) at Eagles (1-0)

LINE: PHILADELPHIA BY 2 1/2

The Ravens came flying out of the gate on Monday night, steamrolling the Bengals. No doubt that Baltimore is for real. However, the schedulers did them no favour as they arrive in Philly on short week and then will host New England in prime timer next Sunday night. Bit much.

TAKING: EAGLES -2 1/2

Browns (0-1) at Bengals (0-1)

LINE: CINCINNATI BY 7

The Browns almost upset the Eagles while the Bengals were smoked by the Ravens. Yet, Cincinnati is favoured by a full touchdown. That's just an indication of how poor the Browns really are and with their inept rookie QB on road for first time, this one could easily get out of hand.

TAKING: BENGALS -7

THE REST

Texans (1-0) at Jaguars (0-1)

LINE: HOUSTON BY 7

The superior Texans rarely have an easy time of it with Jaguars and despite losing last week, Jacksonville showing some promise. Prohibitive road faves within division is always dangerous, especially when Houston goes to visit old friend Peyton in Denver next week.

TAKING: JAGUARS +7

Cowboys (1-0) at Seahawks (0-1)

LINE: DALLAS BY 3

The Cowboys bandwagon is filling up yet again. All that weight may cause a wheel or two to come off, as we've frequently experienced in the past. While price may appear short, the Seahawks match up well with its underrated defence and Seattle's strong home mark of eight covers in past 10 on this field.

TAKING: SEAHAWKS +3

Redskins (1-0) at Rams (0-1)

LINE: WASHINGTON BY 3

Calm down people. Yes, Washington looked impressive in win over Saints but it's one game and this may be a more telling test. Having to play consecutive road games and coming off the high and attention from last week, Washington could get caught off guard against hard trying Rams.

TAKING: RAMS +3

Jets (1-0) at Steelers (0-1)

LINE: PITTSBURGH BY 6

Defeating the Bills is not a good enough reason for the Jets to suddenly have their mojo back. This will be stiffer test as the Steelers return home and should be able to flex their muscles against New York's hodgepodge group of offensive players.

TAKING: STEELERS -6

Titans (0-1) at Chargers (1-0)

LINE: SAN DIEGO BY 6

We're not buying into Tennessee's 9-7 mark from a year ago. RB Chris Johnson can't seem to get right and QB Jake Locker is not ready to carry this team on his own. The Chargers have owned teams from the AFC West, winning and covering five straight against foes from that neighbourhood.

TAKING: CHARGERS -6

Lions (1-0) at Niners (1-0)

LINE: SAN FRANCISO BY 7

The Niners defeated the Lions in Detroit last year by a 25-19 count. Detroit would like nothing more than to return the favour. San Fran performed flawlessly in win at Lambeau but could suffer slight hangover from that one. The Lions are at their best when taking points with eight covers in past 12 tries.

TAKING: LIONS +7
