Disgraced NFL veteran Chad Johnson has been slapped with divorce papers from his new wife Evelyn Lozada following his weekend arrest for domestic violence.
The wide receiver, formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, wed reality TV star Lozada on July 4, but the heated altercation which landed Johnson in jail on Saturday night appears to have put an end to their six-week marriage.
In legal papers filed in Florida on Tuesday, Lozada states their union is "irretrievably broken", reports TMZ.com.
Lozada required medical treatment for a cut to her forehead she claims was caused by Johnson headbutting her during an argument at their Miami home.
Johnson was released from custody on Sunday and was immediately dropped from his team, the Miami Dolphins.
The incident also cost him a second lucrative contract with VH1 TV bosses, who decided to axe plans to air the couple's new reality show, Ev and Ocho.
Johnson now faces a misdemeanour charge of simple domestic battery.
