Quarterback Drew Brees on Tuesday was non-commital about attending voluntary workouts with his Saints teammates next week.

New Orleans could not strike a new deal with Brees by the time he would have become a free agent last month and, thus, franchise-tagged him for the 2012 season. Brees was reportedly bitter about it.

Asked if he'll attend Monday's voluntary workouts, Brees said, "We're continuing to work on a long-term deal," according to the Los Angeles Times.

Asked the same question again, Brees gave the same answer.

These are not the best of times in the Big Easy.

LUCK FINALLY A LOCK FOR INDY?: Quarterback prospect extraordinaire Andrew Luck visited with the Colts in Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon, before reportedly flying off to Washington to meet with Redskins brass in the evening.

Colts owner Jim Irsay sometimes throws out newsy little nuggets on Twitter, a medium the eccentric normally reserves for publicizing lyrics of obscure classic-rock songs, or awesome lines from The Big Lebowski.

On Tuesday, Irsay tweeted: "Met with A Luck#12 n Indy 2day for 3 hrs;it's easy 2c why the #1 pick n this Stanford phenom has been synonymous with each other 4over 2 yrs."

Or, as Toronto Sun sports deskman John Fitz-Gerald once famously observed about a sloppy writer, maybe he just sat on his keyboard before hitting the 'send' button.

HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE: Veteran wide receiver Steve Smith agreed to an extension with the Carolina Panthers that locks up the 32-year-old for at least four more seasons. He'll reportedly get $18 million guaranteed, but he cited the fact his family wanted to stay in the Charlotte area as a big reason for staying. "Happy wife, happy life," he said at his presser.
