CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Bengals took a step toward shoring up their ground game by signing former New England Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

The deal, officially announced by the Bengals on Thursday, was reportedly for three years.

Green-Ellis, who spent his first four seasons on the Patriots, is expected to take over for Cedric Benson, who is said to be unlikely to re-sign with the Bengals.

After being used mostly as a reserve in his first two seasons, Green-Ellis took a big step in 2010, starting 11 of his 16 games and posting career-highs in rushing attempts (229), yards (1,008) and touchdowns (13).

Green-Ellis, 26, played in 53 games -- 20 starts -- with the Patriots, rushing for 2,064 yards and 29 touchdowns on 510 attempts while catching 26 passes for 292 yards.
