The family of ex-Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson has filed a wrongful death suit against the NFL over his suicide.

Duerson died on Feb. 17, 2011, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The suit was filed Thursday on behalf of his children.

In it, his family accuses the league of negligently causing the brain damage that led Duerson to shoot himself at age of 50, and for not warning him of the negative effects of concussions. The lawsuit cites experts from Boston University experts, who have charged that Duerson suffered from advanced brain damage when he died.

In a statement, the NFL said that it hasn’t seen the lawsuit or had it reviewed by attorneys.

Duerson played on two Super Bowl Champions, the 1985 Bears and the 1990 New York Giants.
