BOSTON - New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was arrested early Tuesday morning for indecent assault and battery.

The 25-year-old was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. EDT in Boston's Back Bay section for allegedly groping a woman inside a nightclub.

Patriots spokesperson Stacey James released a statement from Edelman's agent, Don Yee, on Tuesday.

"The charges will be fought vigorously within the court system, instead of a rush to judgment elsewhere," Yee said. "We have no further comment beyond that."

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said during his Tuesday conference call that, "I don't think we have enough information to comment on that right now."

According to the police report, the alleged victim said a man, later identified as Edelman, "reached under her costume and grabbed her vagina." A witness said he saw Edelman bump into the woman and saw her "face change into an expression of shock," the report said.

Edelman, the woman, and the witness were all ejected from the club. The club's manager told police saw the witness threatening to beat up Edelman.

The witness and alleged victim met police outside Storyville, a restaurant and nightclub, and identified Edelman, who denied the allegation.

Edelman was told at his arraignment on Tuesday to stay away from the alleged victim, according to WBZ-TV, as well as Storyville. The station reported he was released without bail.
