DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Chad Henne on injured reserve Thursday and signed veteran quarterback Sage Rosenfels as a backup.

As expected, Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said Matt Moore will assume the role of starter. Moore took over after Henne went down in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to San Diego with a shoulder injury.

Henne will reportedly undergo a procedure on his left non-throwing shoulder.

The quarterback was injured on a broken play against the Chargers when he attempted a handoff to running back Lex Hilliard, who ran in a different direction. Henne tried to lunge forward for yards and fell awkwardly on the shoulder.

The fourth-year Michigan product completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 868 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions this season.

The 0-4 Dolphins are on a bye this week and will next play on October 17 in a Monday night game against the Jets, when Moore will get the start.

Moore signed with Miami after spending the last four years with Carolina and completed 17-of-26 passes for 167 yards with an interception against the Chargers.

Rosenfels, just released by the Giants this week, spent four of his 10-plus NFL seasons with the Dolphins from 2002-2005, making two starts in 13 games.
