JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars will start rookie Blaine Gabbert at quarterback for Sunday's game against Carolina.
Gabbert was selected with the 10th overall pick of the 2011 draft and will make his first NFL start opposite the top pick of the draft -- Carolina's Cam Newton.
Luke McCown had started the first two games of the season for Jacksonville after projected starter David Garrard was suddenly released just days before the season-opener against Tennessee.
McCown played fairly well against the Titans in a 16-14 win, throwing for 175 yards while completing 17-of-24 passes. However, he connected on just 6-of-19 throws for 59 yards and was picked off four times in a 32-3 loss to the Jets this past Sunday.
Gabbert took over late against the Jets and was 5-for-6 for 52 yards in his first NFL action.
An honourable mention All-Big 12 at Missouri, Gabbert threw for 6,822 yards with 40 touchdowns and led the Tigers to a record of 18-8 as a starter.
