FOXBOROUGH, MASS. - Tight end Antonio Gates usually plays a big role in the San Diego Chargers passing game.

At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Gates is a load to handle and is usually one of the favourite targets of quarterback Philip Rivers.

But not on Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Gates, who was double-teamed the entire afternoon, didn’t have a reception as the Chargers absorbed a 35-21 loss.

“They would put a corner and a safety on me, or two safeties,” Gates said. “They did a lot of different things to take me out of the game.

“I kept working at it, kept trying but the end result was I couldn’t get the ball to come my way.”

It was a wrinkle the Chargers didn’t expect.

“They had a tremendous game plan and they executed well,” Gates added. “They gave us different looks, a combination of things, making it difficult for me to release off the ball.”
