Reason to fear Chargers receivers

FOXBORO, MASS. - One of the matchups that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick isn’t happy about is the size of the San Diego Chargers receivers.

Wide receiver Vincent Jackson is 6-foot-5 and weighs 230 pounds while Malcolm Floyd is 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds. Then there is tight end Antonio Gates, a favourite target of quarterback Philip Rivers, who is 6-foot-4, 260-pounds. That’s a load for the Patriots secondary to contend with.

“I’m saying the receivers look like tight ends,” Belichick said following Friday’s practice. “They’re big. They’re physical. They can really go up for the ball down the field and Rivers is a very good deep ball thrower. Philip can lay it up there and those guys have great size, both weight-wise and height-wise. They go up and get the ball, just rebound it.

“I mean, you’ve got them covered and they just go up and take it away from you. It’s definitely a challenge for our defensive backs, competing for the ball down the field and matching up to the size at receiver and also, they put Gates out and you have another 260-pound guy running through the defence, going up and making catches. Those guys are big, they’re physical and have very good ball skills. Yeah, they’re tough.”
