PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed standout safety Troy Polamalu to a four-year contract extension on Saturday, one day before the club opens the regular season in Baltimore.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The six-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro safety has been a linchpin on Dick LeBeau's defense since he was taken with the 16th overall selection in the 2003 draft. He has been part of two Super Bowl winners and another that won the AFC title last season.

Polamalu battled lingering ailments last season, but still started 14 games and tied a career high with seven interceptions and one touchdown. He also accounted for 63 tackles and one sack last season.

In his career, the Southern California product has 27 interceptions.
