The San Francisco 49ers signed safety Donte Whitner to a three-year contract on Saturday.

Whitner, 26, spent the first five years of his career in Buffalo after the Bills selected him with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft.

The Ohio State product played 69 games with the club and totaled five interceptions, three forced fumbles, 1 1/2 sacks and 451 tackles, including a career-high 140 stops last season.

San Francisco also signed cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety Madieu Williams to their defensive backfield this week.
