BUFFALO - Whether it’s the third pick overall a week from Thursday or the second pick in the second round a day later, chances are very good that Bills starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to get some company.

Just like the San Diego Chargers did drafting Philip Rivers with Drew Brees still very much at the peak of his game, Buffalo GM Buddy Nix said it just makes sense for the Bills to follow that script and snag a quarterback.

“It’s a quarterback driven league but we think we’re in a good position,” Nix began Tuesday. “And actually as hard as it is to say that when you have other needs, it’s probably a perfect time to take a guy. I go back to San Diego, and I have to draw from that, but if you can do it the way we did with Drew Brees it makes it easier. If you can take a guy and sit him a year or two until he’s knowledgeable and ready to play his success rate is going to be pretty high.”

If the Bills do wait until the second round, Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert should both be gone, but there’s an interesting second tier that includes Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder and Andy Dalton.
