Cam Newton may have stared down the nationís media better, but when it came to Sundayís NFL Scouting Combine workouts for quarterbacks, the decisive edge went to Arkansasís Ryan Mallett.

Newton struggled to make many of the long throws Sunday showing very little touch despite his obvious athletic ability.

Mallett, who sneered his way through media interviews on Saturday, had the best day of any quarterback hitting his receivers in stride and on the numbers whether the routes were short outs or deep balls.

Washingtonís Jake Locker, whose stock appeared to be falling here despite a good 40-yard dash time, started slowly in the passing drills but finished strong.

The biggest surprise among the quarterbacks was Florida Stateís Christian Ponder, who followed up his MVP game at the Senior Bowl with a solid all-around day throwing the football.

Missouriís Blaine Gabbert was the only QB who elected not to throw at the combine.
