Lake Forest, Ill. -- Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson died at his Miami home Thursday night at the age of 50.

The cause of death was not immediately released.

"We are stunned and saddened to hear the tragic news regarding Dave Duerson. He was a great contributor to our team and the Chicago community," the Bears said in a statement on Friday. "Today is a difficult day for all of us who loved Dave. We'll miss him. Our prayers are with his family."

Duerson was part of the Bears' secondary from 1983-89. He went to four Pro Bowls during that time and helped the club win the Super Bowl XX title.

The Notre Dame alumnus went on to capture another championship with the Giants following the 1990 campaign and also played for Arizona from 1991-93, finishing his career with 20 interceptions and 16 sacks.
