St. Louis police say they found marijuana and three weapons in a car with six occupants, allegedly including Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney.

Publicist Jane Higgins confirmed that Maroney, a native of St. Louis, was arrested late Monday night but said that he was released Tuesday from a holding cell without being charged.

"Mr. Maroney was unlawfully arrested for possession of weapons," Higgins said in a statement. "He holds a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He was not arrested for any drugs nor was he involved in a high-speed chase. He was released without being charged with any offence and we do not anticipate he will be charged with any criminal offence."

Higgins told media that Maroney had a gun on him but did not have the concealed-carry permit when arrested.

Police said five of the six occupants were arrested but refused to identify them.

Police said one of the men had a gun permit but was arrested for possession a firearm while under the influence of drugs.

They are awaiting lab tests on the substance they believe to be marijuana.
