SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers have called a Friday afternoon press conference, at which time they will reportedly introduce Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach.

Harbaugh, courted by several college and NFL teams, will leave Stanford but remain in the area to coach the 49ers, according to the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi and several other sources.

ESPN's Adam Schefter says Harbaugh is signing a five-year deal worth $25 million.

The 49ers have not officially announced the hire, but they have scheduled a press conference at the Palace Hotel in downtown San Francisco for 3:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. ET).

Harbaugh coached Stanford to a 12-1 record and a victory in the Orange Bowl, completing a remarkable turnaround for a program that went just 1-11 four seasons ago.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck announced Thursday that he would remain in school instead of declaring for the NFL Draft, where he likely would have been the No. 1 pick.
