SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers have named Trent Baalke as their general manager and are set to begin the process of hiring a new coach.

"Trent has done an exceptional job in his role as vice president of player personnel and throughout his tenure with the 49ers," team president Jed York said in a statement on San Francisco's website (www.49ers.com).

"I am confident that Trent will find the 49ers an excellent head coach who will lead us to great success in the coming years," York added.

The new coach will succeed Mike Singletary who was fired after the 49ers went 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season.

Baalke, 46, replaced Scot McCloughan who left in March. He worked as a scout for the New York Jets and Washington Redskins before joining the 49ers in 2005 as a regional scout.

He served as director of player personnel from 2008-09 and had been in charge of all personnel decisions since McCloughan's departure.
