FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will start on Sunday against Buffalo, despite not having much at stake.

Head coach Rex Ryan made the announcement during his Thursday press conference, saying Sanchez was throwing the ball well despite a shoulder injury.

"We'll go ahead and start Mark this game," Ryan said. "How long he plays, we'll determine that as the game goes. He will start for us."

The Jets are assured one of the AFC's wild card spots regardless of Sunday's result and don't control their own fate. Barring a loss by Pittsburgh and a win by Baltimore, New York will be slotted as the sixth seed and will play at either Kansas City, Indianapolis or Jacksonville in the first round of the playoffs.

Sanchez has not missed a game this season and has thrown for 3,291 yards and 17 touchdowns with 13 interceptions for the 10-5 Jets.
